Iraq Higher Education, College Opportunities Slowly Improving
Academic scholars in Iraq, together with support from the international community, are undertaking the monumental task of rebuilding, and in many instances, redefining Iraqi higher education.
A forced exodus from Baghdad and many other cities in Iraq after the 2003 American invasion left the country without many of its scholars. In addition to more contemporary events, Iraq’s higher education system took a ‘wallop’ two decades earlier when the United Nations imposed sanctions meant to deskill and isolate a population of Iraqi citizens feared to be a general danger. The UN did so by denying many students access to science and medical journals, teaching equipment, and the Internet.
Current efforts are being spearheaded by several international groups, which are attempting to not simply rebuild Iraq’s previous collegiate structure, but also to create an effective education system, free of political and religious propaganda that will effectively prepare students for a global work place. The United Kingdom’s Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA) is working with the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education to safely return the nation’s scholars from exile. In addition to CARA’s work, the University of Phoenix-Middle East is also making tremendous strides in stabilizing career education in Iraq by offering online classes to students. The flexibility of online courses has been particularly well received by students who work full-time to support their families. Mosul University in Iraq and the University of Baghdad also offer practical and vocational programs for the 21st Century, such as veterinary medicine, legal studies, nursing, and dentistry. In Pursuit Of Higher Education Online
There is an up-and-coming trend in education called distance learning. This is a direct result of increasing use of the Internet as well as the fact that more people have to work during traditional school hours in order to make ends meet. You need to be cautious when researching schools, however, since there are many educational institutions that provide diplomas and certifications that have no value in the world of work.
When employers evaluate the education of a potential employee, one of the first things they look for is whether or not the school was accredited. These are periodically evaluated by the governmental agencies to ensure that their expectations, coursework, and diploma programs provide the best education possible. This is especially important when evaluating online educational institutions since ensuring that the efforts result in the position desired upon conclusion is important.
A further reason to ensure the program selected meets the endorsement requirements outlined is that if one wishes to pursue higher education later on, completed credits cannot be transferred to accredited institutions. What this means is that in the event a higher degree is desired, the education process would have to be started over.
